The Australian landscape can instil fear and inspire awe - it is an ecosystem entirely its own. The picture of Australia evoked by Dorothea Mackellar's 'My Country' still rings true more than 100 years later. She is a land that is beautiful and terrifying, harsh just as she is nurturing.

It is a contradiction that will feel familiar to any woman. The experience of womanhood - motherhood, love, heartbreak, grief, desire, becoming - rarely arrives as one thing. It is tender and devastating, expansive and suffocating, often within the same moment.

Her Beauty and Her Terror brings together 100 contemporary Australian women poets turning to the landscape around them to make sense of that contradiction - finding in its extremities, subtleties and forms a mirror for the full and complex range of what it means to be a woman.

About the Editor

Founder of the independent publishing imprint In Her Own Words and editor of its debut anthology Her Beauty and Her Terror, Lucy Manwaring is a passionate storyteller and communications professional.

Based on her property outside Condobolin in Central West NSW, Lucy works across editorial, content strategy and communications for clients throughout rural and regional Australia. She has a deep appreciation for the beauty and terror of life on the land, and for the women who call it home.

Her own poetry explores human psychology and behaviour, often finding reflections of the self and others in the natural world around her.

About the Contributors

The contributors to Her Beauty and Her Terror represent seven Australian states and territories, bringing together a wide-ranging collection of voices from across the country.

They span generations - from young writers at the beginning of their creative journeys to more established voices, as well as contributors whose work has been published posthumously. This breadth of age and experience reflects the anthology’s commitment to capturing womanhood in all its stages, forms, and contradictions.

They also come from diverse backgrounds - Indigenous and non-Indigenous, migrants and multigenerational Australians, regional and metropolitan, early-career writers and established voices - united by a shared willingness to explore complex emotional realities through poetry.
