Synopsis

Bringing together the voices of 100 Australian women, Her Beauty and Her Terror captures the complexity of the female experience in all its contradictions: strength and softness, love and loss, beauty and brutality.

Many of the contributors in this collection are sharing their work publicly for the first time, offering deeply personal insights into a mosaic of themes encompassing identity, motherhood, grief, desire, resilience and everything in between.

Beginning in raw, unfiltered terrain, it starts by unpacking fiery, unguarded emotion before guiding the reader through a curated journey of reflection and empowerment. Grounded in distinctly Australian landscapes, the work moves toward a deeper understanding - revealing poetry as a powerful tool for growth, clarity and self-awareness.

A considered, design-led collection intended to sit as both a literary work and a keepsake, Her Beauty and Her Terror is not just a book to be read, but one to be returned to. It invites women of all experiences, ages and backgrounds to see a small piece of themselves reflected within its pages, and to honour the power of artistic expression and vulnerability in making meaning of their lives.

Meet the Editor

Founder of In Her Own Words and editor of Her Beauty and Her Terror, Lucy Manwaring (née Kirk), is a communications professional, a passionate storyteller, presenter, and poet.

Working from her property in Central West NSW, Lucy has a deep appreciation for the beauty and terror of life on the land, and for the women who call it home. Her poetry explores human psychology and behaviour, often finding reflections of the self and others in the natural world around us. Through this lens, she examines the complexities of identity, emotion, and the patterns that shape how we live and relate to one another.
